Mission
The research focus of the EPFL Laboratory for Bio- and Nano-Instrumentation is centered on developing advanced nanoscale measurement technologies for applications in nanoscience, materials science and life science.
We seek an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to develop next-generation MEMS probes and instrumentation for cryogenic scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and quantum measurements. The position is part of a recently funded project on multifunctional self-sensing probe technologies for experiments on quantum materials under cryogenic and vacuum conditions.
Main duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate will work at the interface of MEMS microfabrication, scanning probe instrumentation and cryogenic measurement technology. Main responsibilities include:
- Design, fabrication and characterization of advanced MEMS probes for cryo- SPM
- Development and optimization of wafer-scale micro- and nanofabrication processes, including integration of sensing, actuation and electrical functionalities
- Mechanical, electrical and thermal characterization of prototype devices, including measurements under vacuum and cryogenic conditions
- Integration and testing of probes in scanning probe instrumentation
- Collaboration with academic and industrial partners working in quantum materials and cryogenic SPM
- Analysis and publication of results, participation in student supervision, and contribution to technology transfer activities
Profile
- PhD in microengineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, materials science, or a closely related field
- Strong hands-on experience in MEMS or micro/nanofabrication
- Practical experience with several relevant cleanroom techniques, such as photolithography, thin-film deposition, plasma or wet etching, metallization, wafer bonding, or thin-film patterning
- Experience in the design and experimental characterization of micro- or nanoscale devices
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: scanning probe microscopy (AFM/STM), piezoelectric/resistive MEMS, low-noise electrical measurements, or vacuum/cryogenic instrumentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to independently troubleshoot complex experimental problems
- Independent, creative and collaborative working style, with excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Experience in quantum materials is advantageous but not required; strong MEMS and instrumentation candidates are encouraged to apply.
