AO Foundation offers a PhD position at the AO Research Institute Davos, in collaboration with CK CARE and the University of Fribourg. The research project develops enzyme-responsive hydrogels and microparticles for localized infection prevention and evaluates their effects in neutrophil assays.

Tasks

  • Select enzyme-degradable linker sequences for conjugation to hyaluronan
  • Develop and characterize hyaluronan hydrogels and crosslinkers using NMR, FT-IR and rheology
  • Measure enzyme-triggered gel degradation and model-compound release kinetics
  • Load immunomodulators into hydrogels by covalent ligation or encapsulation
  • Develop enzyme-responsive core-shell microparticles for controlled release
  • Assess material performance and modulator efficacy in in vitro neutrophil assays

Requirements

  • Master's degree in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biomaterials science/engineering or related discipline
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Ability to design, plan and execute experimental studies independently
  • Strong interest in biomaterials science, innate immunity and translational research
  • Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment
  • Interest in orthopaedic device-related infection and microbiology
  • Drive and commitment to carry out a demanding research project

Nice to have

  • Practical experience in polymer derivatization and soft biomaterials preparation or characterization
  • Experience preparing micro- or nanoparticle-based delivery systems
  • Experience with tissue cell culture and immunological assays
  • Experience with primary immune cells, especially neutrophils, or familiarity with 3D cell/tissue culture
