The International Committee of the Red Cross seeks an Interpreter for mobile deployment in various West African contexts. The role involves interpretation, translation and reporting in humanitarian operations. The maximum-term assignment lasts 12 months and is extendable.

Tasks

  • Interpret orally between Fula/Fulani/Peul and French in confidential interviews, dialogue and family-link activities
  • Translate Fula/Fulani/Peul materials, including articles and correspondence, into written French
  • Analyse and report on detention conditions, security and other matters relating to the ICRC mandate
  • Support other protection activities as needed

Requirements

  • Excellent French (C1)
  • Excellent Fula/Fulani/Peul (C1)
  • At least 2 years of professional experience
  • Good health and medical check-up before field departure
  • Driving licence for manual transmission vehicles
  • Preparedness for unaccompanied first two missions, each at least 12 months, or 24 months total
  • Ability to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments; humanitarian motivation, open-mindedness and adaptability

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in other ICRC operational languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Portuguese
  • Proficiency in Hausa
  • Previous interpreter or translator experience
  • University degree in interpretation or translation
