The role involves interpreting and translating for humanitarian activities, including protection work and visits to detainees. The maximum-term assignment lasts 12 months and is extendable.

Tasks

  • Interpret between Arabic and English during confidential interviews and dialogue with authorities
  • Interpret for ICRC dissemination and family-link activities, including Red Cross messages and family tracing
  • Translate Arabic newspaper articles, correspondence and other materials into written English
  • Analyse and report on detention conditions, security and other matters related to the ICRC mandate
  • Support other protection activities as needed

Requirements

  • Excellent English at C1 level
  • Excellent Arabic at C1 level
  • At least 2 years of professional experience
  • Strong motivation for humanitarian work
  • Ability to work under pressure in a potentially dangerous environment
  • Open-mindedness and adaptability
  • Good health and manual-transmission driving licence; willingness to accept unaccompanied first two missions of at least 12 months each or 24 months total

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in other ICRC operational languages: French, Spanish, Russian or Portuguese
  • Previous interpreter or translator experience
  • University degree in interpretation or translation
